Sugar sachet

My first project starting my design course was to design an environmentally friendly food packaging. Also the packaging had to be designed toward people with a disabilities because this was the criteria for the Vilans student design competition.



















I focused my design on people with motor skill disabilities. The reason I went to redesign the sugar sachet was because, this is what most helping homes use for there patients and it's a fast disposable consumer product. The function of the sachet is the form of the package. The funnel shape creates tension on the packaging when closed. Therefor the sugar can move freely and you don't have to shake the sachet before opening it. The funnel also creates a bigger surface to tear the package this is also made easier trough the small notch on the side. When the package is opened the tension also creates a direct opening wherefrom it's easy to pour the sugar in your coffee or tea.



I sent my design to Vilans to compete for the student innovative design award of 2010. I actually won the award, the price was 1 year funding money of €5000,- to try and produce the sachet and bring it on the market. Unluckily I didn't succeed in this due to my inexperience in the design sector because it was only my first year.
