Honda 50 redesign

Based on interviews done on ± 60 people, 4 different sections of target-groups were created. Within each target group there is be one ideal person, this person had to be made into a persona. From this persona I have to redesign the old Honda C50 into a design that can be sold by Honda for this specific target-group and persona. With my redesign I also have to consider Honda as a company and brand.

After exploiting the nostalgic purist persona and combining him with the Honda key words a personal hypothesis was formed to determine the final design proposal boundaries.

Hypothesis:

Honda is looking for an opportunity to redesign the Honda c50 the redesign will preserve the look of the original bike however the look of the bike may be modernised. The focus for the redesign will be on the front body panels shape, by the introduction of this new panel the Honda will get a new look appealing to the past users of the Honda 50.

With my redesign I wanted to focus on the front side of the C50 and mainly on the front body panels (knee-guard). At first I got the lines of the original c50 on Illustrator in the front and side view from this I started adjusting the front in 19 different proposal ideas (see left) that in my opinion could fit the hypothesis, persona and Honda.

Final proposal:

I chose the second last idea sketch to work out in a proposal. By creating new outer lines for the panel within the boundary of the original panel, the bike gets a cleaner look and it gives the front a bit more “edge” and a modern feeling. The original Honda C50 had a lot of integrated parts for example; the frame, seat framing, petrol tank and mudguard are combined in one part. I also wanted to do this with the front shield by making it going in front of the steering head so the body also protects the steering components as well the engine and the driver. By bringing up the knee guards the bike gets a faster look from the front this suits Honda as a racing company and brings the bike in a new decade but preserves the nostalgic look that corresponds with the persona.

By changing the steering a one-shell part it makes the entire front look cleaner. No additional edges on the plastic. Also the handlebars will be made from the same leather as the seat to create unity all over the bike instead of cheap plastic handlebars. The lighting will be flattened to make a more distinct line from the side of the bike. But trough the chrome finishing around the light the steering will keep his nostalgic look.

The colours for the bike will be a deep red and an off white cream for the front panel. Red is the colour of Honda and by making it a deep red the bike will get an older feeling. The same is with the off white cream this is a colour that is good combined with the deep red. Also this colour gives the bike more of a nostalgic character. If it would be bright colours and a high gloss white the bike would look cheap and for a different target group. The overall of the bike will also be cleaner and more modern by changing all the external visible bolts to click fingers/pins and such. This will also make the entire bike look cleaner-, modern- and natural looking.

I think the redesign of the bike will suit Honda as a company as well as the entire target group of nostalgic purists and the ideal persona Stephen Brannigan.
